An oppression is an unfair treatment which is based on the difference of race, sex, class, etc., and it has a big influences to human lives. According to Bell Hooks, an oppression is a lack of liberation, right, and equality. Oppressed people don’t have social, political, and economic power. Oppression also comes from an ideology that things should be normal.
Women supposed to be oppressed, however, there are men who are oppressed as same as women. The level of oppression is different, and it depends on class and race, not just on sex. It is possible that there are men who are poor and marginalized because of their race. Then, it coulde be understood that some of men are also oppressed like women. When we think a struggle to end a certain oppression toward women, we need to difine that what level of liberation and of equality should be obtained to end a certain oppression.
“Oppression also comes from an ideology that things should be normal.”
Normality defined by whom?
Can we take this deeper? Let’s (attempt to) trace this normality to its conclusion. Who benefits from the present relations being deemed normal? Why is it that ‘normal’ and ‘status quo’ are so highly valued in all our lives, even amongst those who are harmed by ‘business as usual’?
