Putting theory into practice. Praxis is theory in action.
Praxis is an important companion to feminist theory. As bell hooks discusses in her article “Feminism: A Movement to End Sexist Oppression” there is no feminist movement without praxis. Lifestyle feminism isn’t enough because theory is not an end in itself to the problems it analyzes. In a field of study devoted to analyzing sexist oppression, it would follow that a desire would arise to end it. Out of that desire must come action- theory must become praxis.
So is praxis just any old action? Which comes first–theory or action? Is it always the same?
I would say that praxis is any action that is done in accordance with theory, but more specifically could be said to be an action that is in accordance with one’s theory and acts to create change to reinforce and manifest the theory.
I think that theory can lead to action about as easily as action can lead a person to create a theory to support it or to encounter established theories in line with the actions. I’ve seen theory lead to action more frequently than the reverse but it certainly isn’t a one way street.
“there is no feminist movement without praxis. Lifestyle feminism isn’t enough because theory is not an end in itself to the problems it analyzes.”
Often the problem with theory’s relation to praxis is the desire to perfect our theory. You are correct to state that one cannot have a movement if one is not moving. That is, theory is stagnant and praxis is energy and (be it right or wrong) progress.
The temptation is always to wait, to try to “work out the kinks” in the system and “sand off the rough corners” of the theorized ideas. After all, doesn’t it make sense that we would want a PERFECT theory before we embark foolishly on a path of action? Won’t flaws in our theory doom any movement subsequent to it?
No. We are crafting our theory bounded in a particular spatial and temporal environment. It does not follow that if we create a ‘perfect’ theory for one time and space that that perfection will necessarily march along with the historico-materialist progression of time. What is perfect today does not guarantee perfection tomorrow. We can only apply our theory of today–to praxis–and through action and interaction with tomorrow determine necessary changes.
I have a particular admiration for those who jump into the action, determined to ‘make it up as they go.’ Because, when one really thinks about it, can anyone do anything else…?
from what I understood praxis and feminist theory come together as in you put your feminist theory into action(praxis)
